Audax No. 7 and the 100km Consensus
Audax is a group effort. The tempo is not subjective. It's fixed, or at least as fixed as it can be in actual practice. On the road, pace and momentum, inertia, as well as moods and legs are never static. It takes a lot of compromise to experience a five hour long consensus! The whole thing doesn't necessarily feel good, but the benefits of overcoming the challenges, be they physical, mental, emotional, personal or social, become evident once we unclip and put our feet back o

A failure we can be proud of
After missing No. 5's goals due to lack of participation, we just failed a second audax, but it wasn't in a bad or loathsome way. After just over 101 kilometers, and more than 5 hours, 6 of us arrived back at the Denton square less than 3 minutes down on our minimum average speed. After starting with 8 and picking up one more right away, and after 3 voluntary abandons en route, we finished with 6 riders on 5 bicycles in 308 minutes, with an average speed of 19.8 kph. After we

Denton's First Failed Audax
It happened. We failed an audax attempt. But it didn't happen the way I was expecting. Our riding was not the problem. It turns out the scope of an audax ride is bigger than we first thought because we failed before we even left. When you set really specific parameters for a ride, like riding together, predetermining the speed, and planning arrival at checkpoints en route down to the minute, you're guaranteed to not meet expectations at some point. We learned this week that,

Sub 24 Hour Overnighter (s24o)
Part of riding longer distances is riding at night; part of riding even longer is sleeping during a ride. This isn't exactly camping, but it is definitely the outer limit of cycling. I've definitely failed at long rides because I wasn't prepared to sleep during the hottest or darkest time of the day. I've also cut adventures short because I "needed" to get home. Essentially, when you're on long bike rides, you have to be ready to sleep when you need to sleep. But this takes p

Audax No. 4: Recap
Getting our caff-lean on. Map and sign-in sheet, pre-ride rendez-vous at Shift Coffee. Rolled away from the cafe a little behind schedule... Gary made it to the second stop, even after going down hard, losing two bottles, smashing a banana, and reshaping his helmet. Gary, abandon (crash) Can't go over it; can't go under; have to go around it! Waiting on the train, don't think anyone times that... Getting back on schedule. This was a hard section including Orchid Hill climb an
