Audax No. 11: post ride
We left with 6 eager riders perfectly on time. Finding a good rhythm early, we got to the next stop 2 minutes ahead of schedule. By the second stop, we were down to 5 riders but still up 2 minutes, possibly thanks to our first rolling natural break! The wind was starting to pick up, and we saw some kind of giant non-native snake coiled up on the side of the road! Truly an exciting segment. It was starting to heat up when we were stopped by a train before our 20-minute stop. T

Audax No. 10: Recap
I know there will be adverse reactions to the reality of Audax No. 10, but part of this sport is facing harsh realities. We failed the audax. Not for time. Not because of finishers. We failed because we only had 3 starters. We always start with at least 4, and finish with at least 3. These rules are arbitrary, but they are fundamental in the discipline that is audax riding. We failed, but 3 of us still rode; we still met our own standard; we still overcame the challenges of t

The Legend of Cycling Calls
I don’t know if any of this is true. This is just what I remember from what I was told over the years. But it’s not history. This is firsthand knowledge. My friend’s dad, who was supposedly a pretty successful amateur bike racer in his day, used to sit around and tell us stories. Most of these, he said, were originally told to him by his father, my friend’s grandfather, who was a professional cyclist in the 1920’s and 30’s. Back then, “cycling calls” were a fundamental part o

Audax No. 9: We still have a lot to learn
We did No. 9 within our predetermined time limit, but only by 4 minutes... We started with 5 and finished 5. And that's good. But I'm glad to say, we still have a lot to learn about riding audax. Here are some things I think we learned this week: You develop effective routines in order to rely on them when you're in difficulty. This includes eating and drinking, pre and post ride. Climbing on an audax, especially on steep grades, can sometimes take more power than going fast
